Minions Movie Review

Movie Title: Minions
Genre: Animation, Comedy, Family
Release Date: July 10, 2015
Running Time: 91 minutes
Rated: PG

Minions. Yes—these are the same minions from Despicable Me. And this is their story. Minions have been around for who knows how long—from the dinosaurs to the stone age, from ancient Egypt to Dracula. You know where I'm going with this, right? These yellow, gibberish-speaking minions have only one purpose in life: to find a despicable master and serve them. I know what you're thinking—total masochists, am I right? And so, minions Kevin, Stuart, and Bob embark on a quest in finding the most villainous villain in order to save their people from total depression. Yes, the minions are in depression because they don't have a master to serve. Doesn't that scream "masochists"? Well, these masochistic minions are in luck because they do find a supervillain: Scarlet Overkill.

So I watched Minions yesterday, and of course, before every movie, I usually check how many stars it has on IMDB. Surprisingly, Minions is only a 6.9. That's pretty low considering this is an animated movie. But unfortunately, I totally agree that this movie wasn't up to par. But because it's so hyped, you should watch it anyway. Maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did! But personally, I think it'll forever live in the shadow of its predecessor Despicable Me.

First of all, the story is definitely the weakest part of the movie. Before I go any further, be warned that there's gonna be some spoilers coming up! (I'll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum.)

They're are quite a few holes in the movie's logic. For example, Gru shows up in the end (surprise, surprise) and what? He's like 7? 8? Well, one thing's for certain—HE'S A KID. But if this movie takes place in 1968 and the events of Despicable Me presumably takes place in 2010 (when the movie was released), then shouldn't Gru be like 50 or something?? Or at least in his late 40s. But he definitely looks way younger than 40 something. Or maybe I'm wrong and Gru actually is that old.

So like I mentioned in the plot, there are three main minions: Kevin, Stuart, and Bob. In the beginning when they were on the boat, Stuart was the one who was picturing the other two as bananas due to a lack of hunger. So I thought it was safe to assume that Stuart was the banana minion. But then, when the three get to New York, Bob gets separated from the other two, following a lady with a banana dress on. I thought Stuart was the banana guy? So why does Bob suddenly have a thing for bananas?

I totally think Scarlet's reason for turning on Kevin, Stuart, and Bob is so weak and stupid. I mean seriously? Scarlet wanted the Queen's crown and so she sent Kevin, Stuart, and Bob to go steal it for her. That part makes sense. But then Bob is crowned King and Scarlet automatically thinks the minions betrayed her, and so she goes on a warpath. But really? That's not how I see it. The minions manage to retrieve the crown PER SCARLET'S ORDERS. They did what Scarlet wanted. For all we know, they could've been on their way back to Scarlet before she stormed into the palace. Like I said before, WEAK AND STUPID. And despite the minions's efforts in giving Scarlet the crown, she still locks them up. Well, I guess that's pretty logical since she is a supervillain.

Everything after that is pretty much predictable. The big fight scene between the heroes and the villain, someone sacrificing himself to save everyone else, blah blah blah. It's your typical animated movie. But of course, since this is a comedy, no one can actually die. That's not very funny! So of course, this movie teases death by making it seem like someone died only for them to appear moments later. Just FYI, the death isn't any where near tear-worthy. Poorly executed if you ask me. Even if the hero didn't actually die, the writers still should've made the scene sadder!! Sadder is better. I know a movie is really good if it can make me tear up!!

Oh yeah, and another thing, Scarlet was supposed to die in the explosion as well, but she was able to magically survive unscathed. I know she's cool and all, but I don't think being able to withstand substantial explosions should be one of her abilities...

Overall, Minions is a nice movie to watch. Sure, it's not the greatest movie ever made, but it's not terrible. You'll definitely get a nice laugh. Humor is the one thing this movie is NOT lacking. The minions are definitely too mischievous for their own good. And I like how we can understand them without actually understanding them. Well, unless you can speak Minionese, but I doubt it! This movie is a prequel to Despicable Me, so in order to get the full experience, you should watch Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 BEFORE you watch Minions!

Characters:
Kevin: Kevin definitely gives off the older brother type. He seems like the leader of the trio. I don't think you can call it a running gag, but in the movie, Bob always has a smudge of dirt on his face and Kevin wipes it off. Brotherly-like right? :)

Stuart: Stuart is a star—or at least he wants to be one. He's always carrying around his ukulele. Or is it a mini guitar? My point is he's the musician of the group. He also has one eye, making him a cyclops. Just kidding!!

Bob: Bob is the baby of the group. He's like a little kid!! Definitely the cutest minion because of his child-like personality. He carries a stuffed bear around named Tim. ISN'T THAT CUTE?! Bob's the shortest, making him seem kind of stubby, but that's what makes him cute!!

Scarlet Overkill: Scarlet's the first female supervillain and she's pretty awesome—skills wise!! I really like how her dress has a little poof at the end; it makes her shadow really cute HAHA I know that sounds kind of weird. But it's that poof in her dress that adds the sass and confidence in her personality.
Herb Overkill: Herb is Scarlet's husband. He makes all the cool gadgets including the one the makes Kevin into gigantasaur!! HAHA Now, normally the H in "Herb" is silent, but I guess in the movie, you pronounce the H, so it's "Herb" instead of "Erb."
